From my experience polybutylene pipe has a life expectancy of approximately 30 years and could be significant concern when buying or selling a home. Polybutylene pipe has been discontinued for use in and Canada due to plastic fittings that pre maturely fail. It is recommended to contact your insurance service provider for more information on polybutylene piping as there could be a premium on the deductible. It is believed that oxidants in the public water supplies, such as chlorine, react with the polybutylene piping and acetal fittings causing them to scale, flake and become brittle. Micro-fractures are the result and the basic structural integrity of the system is reduced. Thus, the system becomes weak and may fail without warning causing damage to the building structure and personal property.
